Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Therefore seeing we also are surrounded with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily ensnare us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

So begins the 12th and penultimate chapter of Hebrews. But in view of what this 12th chapter is going to say, I think it’s worth digressing to take a look at Jesus’ commission to his 12 apostles. It’s in Matthew 10, verse 5…
