When God created man, the Bible seems to say he stepped back, evaluated what he’d done, and concluded it was very good indeed. But, on reflection, he needed to add something: "It is not good for man to be alone." So he took a rib from Adam and made woman and she was called Eve. But here is my question, why a woman? If God were merely concerned with Adam’s loneliness, why not create another man? Why Adam and Eve? Why not Adam and, say, Ralph?
If you don’t believe in the Bible, then believe in evolution if you must. But you still have to answer the question: Why did Mother Nature give us Adam and Eve? Looking at the question from either side, we come up with the same question and the same answer. Here it is from the Bible:
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth" (Genesis 1:27-28 KJV).
Darwin’s Evolution Requires a Male and Female
Well, now I should hear the sound of a hand slapping a forehead: Of course. If I create Adam and Ralph, that is the end of the process. How silly of me. But wait. What did Mother Nature reveal to her prophet Darwin? Well, pretty much the same thing, but without a meddlesome God to tell us how to order our sex lives. Does it occur to anyone that evolution, as it is described by Darwin and his disciples, requires male and female for reproducing species?
Okay, but what about the products of reproduction? Puppies and children? The animals seem to have been given instincts that handle the care of offspring, but humans seem a little deficient in the instinct category—perhaps to give us more latitude for free will?
What If We Were All Homosexuals?
So, what happens if we all become homosexuals?Andrew Sullivan wrote a piece some time ago in the New Republic titled, "We Are All Sodomites Now." By Sodomites, he meant those who practice non-procreative sex—recreational sex, sex for the fun of it, for mere satisfaction. What happens, of course, is that our species dies out. Homosexual behavior does not create life.
Another step has been taken in that direction in California this year, where the courts, without regard to the will of the people, have legalized same-sex marriage. This is right along the lines of leftist political thought, that we of the proletariat don’t really know what is best for us, and cannot be trusted to make the right decisions through our legislatures. Not long ago, I cited John Kenneth Galbraith, who argued that the power of advertising to manipulate the public is so strong that the law of supply and demand has been eroded. He argued that the masses are given a "false consciousness" and that four things follow:
- First, the consent of the governed, when their behavior is governed by their false consciousness, is unimportant.
- Second, the public requires the supervision of a progressive elite which, somehow emancipated from false consciousness, can engineer true consciousness.
- Third, because consciousness is a reflection of social conditions, true consciousness is engineered by progressive social reforms.
- Fourth, because people in the grip of false consciousness cannot be expected to demand or even consent to such reforms, those reforms usually must be imposed, for example, by judicial fiats.
If you have ever needed a good summary of leftist political philosophy, you have it right there. In spite of the fact that homosexuality is found nowhere in the California constitution, despite the fact that the public, in a referendum, defeated gay marriage, the courts overrode the will of the people to do what they see as good for society.
Why Not Legalize Same-Sex Marriage?
So, why not legalize same-sex marriage? Who could it possibly hurt? According to Frank Turek, children and the rest of society. He was writing a review of a book titled, The Future of Marriage, by David Blankenhorn—a "lifelong liberal democrat who disagrees with the Bible’s prohibitions against homosexual behavior." Despite this, Blankenhorn makes a powerful case against same-sex marriage in his book.[1]
The seminal quote from Blankenhorn is: "Across history and cultures. . . marriage’s single most fundamental idea is that every child needs a mother and a father." Is this true? In the sharpest condemnation of divorce in the Bible, God states in the clearest terms the reason for his condemnation:"You ask, ‘Why?’ It is because the LORD is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. Has not the LORD made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth. ‘I hate divorce,’ says the LORD God of Israel, ‘and I hate a man’s covering himself with violence as well as with his garment,’ says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith" (Malachi 2:14-16 NIV).
I can’t help wondering if the news media will cover gay divorces the way they cover gay marriage. My guess is that when gay couples can’t stand each other any longer, they will just walk away. There may be one or two gay divorces just so that they can exercise the "rights" of straight couples.
Consider the premise again: "Across history and cultures. . . marriage’s single most fundamental idea is that every child needs a mother and a father." The Bible says that God hates divorce because he is looking for a godly offspring. In other words, a mother and father need to stay together for the spiritual health of the child.
What does Darwinism say? Well, without a mother and a father, you don’t get children in the first place. One would think there is a clue in that. But the courts seem to be saying that man is no different from a dog. All the male has to do is provide the sperm and hit the road. And if a woman doesn’t want the offspring, she can kill it before it is born. Thus there is no intrinsic value in human life. So say the courts for whom we are responsible.
Blankenhorn goes on to assert, "One can believe in same-sex marriage. One can believe that every child deserves a mother and a father. One cannot believe both." That’s fair. But I don’t think intellectual leftist thought believes that every child deserves or even needs a mother and a father.
Supreme Court Has Limits
It is hard to imagine what it would take to turn around the moral landslide we now see. Gay marriage is just one more example of where we have come. And it is perhaps one of the most absurd examples. Gay couples cannot beget children. The California Supreme Court cannot bestow that right on gay couples. It is not a right; it is a fact of life. One would think if we can’t believe the Bible, we could at least believe nature.
We might spare a little pity for Adam and Ralph as they come out of church and people throw rice at them. They are the effect of our disease, not the cause of it. They are the product of a society that has completely lost its way. And to some degree, Christians have to carry the blame. For Christians long ago stopped reading the Bible and ordering their life by God’s Law. Consequently, we are no longer the force for good in society that we once were. If it is going to be changed, we are the ones who have to do it.
I’m just telling it like it is and have much more to say on this subject. I do so in a presentation titled Not So Gay Marriage. For a FREE download of this program, just click here. If you would prefer a FREE CD of this Born to Win program, call the office at 1-888-BIBLE-44 to request one. Keep in touch, because we are going to need one another in the days to come.
Yes, that CD really is FREE. That said, without the support of people like you, we would be off the air and have nothing to give anyone. If you feel moved to give, we will be very grateful and we promise to be faithful stewards of the resources God gives us.
