In all my years in education, from the first grade until I graduated from high school, I don’t remember hearing of a single school shooting—anywhere. I went off to the Navy for four years and then college for six, and I still don’t remember hearing of a single one.

Has something changed? Or were there just as many shootings in years gone by, but we just didn’t hear about them? Did the media just treat them as isolated tragedies? Are we just hearing about these shootings now because of the gun-control movement?

No, it’s not just a change in news reporting; something else has changed. It’s not just the availability of guns. Guns were as common as cornbread when I was growing up—we just weren’t shooting teachers with them. What is it that has changed?
